Frequently Asked Questions

What is Sparcq?

Sparcq is a fun way to find people with common interests. Tell Sparcq what you like and Sparcq will show you people you have stuff in common with.

Why would I want to find people with common interests?

Social media should be social. That means connecting with new people, not just friends from high school. The best way to find people to connect with is based on common interests. Not sure who to follow on Twitter? Not sure which groups to join on LinkedIn? Not sure which bands to fan on MySpace? Sparcq solves all those problems.

But why do I have to tell Sparcq what I like?

Without telling Sparcq your interests, Sparcq can't tell you who shares your interests.

Is this information public?

Yes. The items you rate are public in much the same way that tweets on Twitter are public. We will be adding controls to allow you to mark specific ratings as private. However, we encourage you to share as much as you're comfortable with. The more items you rate, the better the recommendations Sparcq can make.

What sort of recommendations does Sparcq make?

Aside from showing you people you should connect with, Sparcq also shows you things you might like. Kinda like the way Netflix recommends movies to you or the way Amazon recommends books. Sparcq can help you discover just about anything, though. Movies, books, music, restaurants, people, cities, sports... the possibilities are endless.

Ah, I see. So, how many items should I rate?

Well, you need to rate at least 10 things. You should rate as many items as you can think of, though. Your Sparcq profile should be a snapshot of your personality. Some people rate thousands! Rating things should be fun, like a game.

So it's like a game? Do I get badges like Foursquare?

Actually, we're trying to take it a little further than just badges. We're working with companies to bring you actual, real-world gifts. Since you're telling Sparcq exactly what you like, we can give you stuff we know you'll like.

I've got some ideas for rewards. Can I suggest a few?

Sure. Just post on our Facebook discussion board.

Cool. So exactly what can I rate on Sparcq?

Just about anything! Our database contains over 3 million items. If you can think of it, you can probably rate it on Sparcq. Books, Movies, Music, Cities.... whatever you want!

Oh, I get it. This would be great to plug into my site. Do you have an API?

Yes! Contact us at developers[AT]sparcq[DOT]com for more information.

I've got some cool ideas for data visualization. Can I use your data?

We love data visualization. Finding patterns in the data is what Sparcq is all about. If you've got some cool ideas, we'll incorporate them right into our site. Shoot us a note at developers[AT]sparcq[DOT]com to let us know what you have in mind.

Why should I link my accounts to Sparcq?

People use Sparcq to discover new friends. If you want to gain new Twitter followers or YouTube subscribers, you should link your accounts. That way, we can show other users how to find you.

When I link to a social network, why am I asked for my password?

We want to make sure that you are linking your Sparcq profile to only your accounts. You never actually give your password to Sparcq. You are always logging directly into each site and authorizing Sparcq. So, no need to worry.

What networks can I link with?

Currently, we support Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, LinkedIn, Foursquare, Digg, YouTube, GoWalla, Last.fm, Flickr, and Delicous. We're constantly adding new networks, though. To make sure people can find you, we suggest linking to as many networks as you can.

I have my own social network. Can you link to me?

Of course! If you support OAuth, send us a note at developers[AT]sparcq[dot]com and we'll be happy to add you. Sparcq is a great way for people to discover your site.

How do I pronounce Sparcq?

Sparcq is pronounced like "spark". We want to spark new relationships and new interests.

Why didn't you just name the site Spark?

Domain names are expensive. And we're a startup.
